Matthias Bitzer
La Maison Automatique
The German artist combines drawing, sculpture and painting creating experience spaces with strong references to history and a deep reflection on identity, in which the viewer can immerse himself. The development of his work shows itself in the increasing complexity of the installations, maintaining their focus on the construction of memory and the reconstruction of reality. His research involves literary personalities who have frequently slipped into outsider positions.
Recently Bitzer focalized his attention on one of the most interesting authors of the 20th century, the Portuguese Fernando Pessoa.
In his life Pessoa gave birth to many fictional authors – so called heteronyms – who, according to their different personalities, have quite different styles of writing.
They are not simply pseudonyms, but personalities with their own biography, education and literary style.
Matthias Bitzer’s works on show investigate this multiplicity of figures and looks on reality through his more and more complex abstract patterns.
In the end – Pessoa wrote in the Book of Unrest – that what remains from today, what remained from yesterday and will remain from tomorrow is namely the insatiable and uncountable desire to be the same person and a different one.
