Deborah-Joyce Holman
Deborah-Joyce Holman was born in Basel, Switzerland (1991) and they live and work between London and Basel.
Their practice is concerned with the relationship between popular visual cultures and capital and the intertwined politics of representation. Holman contrasts the exploitative potential of how images collide with capital with approaches of artistic and cinematic subversion, repetition and refusal using differing approaches across media such as video, sculpture and painting.Their work has recently been shown at Kunsthalle Bern; Galerie Gregor Staiger; (both 2023); Cordova, Barcelona; Istituto Svizzero, Palermo; schwarzescafé, Luma Westbau, Zurich; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (all 2022); 7th Athens Biennial; Cherish, Geneva; Yaby, Madrid; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva (all 2021); La Quadriennale di Roma (2020); Mikro, Zurich; Fondation Entreprise Ricard, Paris; Auto Italia, London (all 2019), among others.
From 2020-2022, Holman worked at East London arts organisation Auto Italia as Associate Director. They were the founding director of 1.1, a platform for early-career practitioners in arts, music and text-based practices, with an exhibition space in Basel, Switzerland, which ran 2015 – 2020. Deborah-Joyce has curated the 2018 and 2019 annual group exhibitions for the arts and music festival Les Urbaines, Lausanne, entitled …and their tooth, finest gold and Cinders, sinuous and supple respectively, presenting newly commissioned works by over 15 international artists. Holman’s work has been exhibited internationally, most notable solo presentations include Kunsthalle Bern and Galerie Gregor Staiger, Zurich (both 2023); Cordova, Barcelona; Istituto Svizzero, Palermo; schwarzescafé, Luma Westbau, Zurich; Sentiment, Zurich; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (all 2022) and Cherish, Geneva (2021). My work has also been exhibited as a part of group exhibitions at MADRE, Naples, (both 2024); 1st Biennale Son, Valais; Simian, Copenhagen; SculptureCenter, New York City; Biennale für Freiburg; EACC Castellón; Oregon Contemporary (all 2023); Last Tango, Zurich (2022); 7th Athens Biennial; Yaby, Madrid; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva (all 2021); La Quadriennale di Roma (2020); Mikro, Zurich; Fondation Entreprise Ricard, Paris; Auto Italia, London (all 2019).
