Dan Graham was an art and culture theorist, photographer, film producer, performance and installation artist. A pioneer in performance and video art in the 1970’s, Graham later turned his attention to architectural projects designed for social interaction in public spaces. Furthermore, writing has been an essential aspect of Graham’s work. His texts range from early conceptual art pieces inserted in mass- market magazines, to writings on his fellow artists, to analyses of popular culture.

Dan Graham has had retrospective exhibitions at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2009) then traveled to Walker Art Ceneter, Minneapolis and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Renaissance Society, University of Chicago (1981); Kunsthalle Berne (1983); the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth (1985), Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (1993); and Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1997). He has participated in Documenta V (1972), VI (1977), VII (1982), IX (1992), and X (1997). In 2001, a major retrospective, “Dan Graham, Works 1965-2000,” opened at the Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal, and traveled to the ARC/Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in Paris; the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo; and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
